About Me

My name is John, I’m 37, married, and I live in Pennsylvania, United States.  I am a sales analyst and database applications developer, mainly in Microsoft Access/Excel.  I work for Olympus America, Inc. (the scientific group, not the camera or medical groups) I have a seven year old son whom we adopted from Guatemala in 2006.  I have a cat, Kuro, who is black with medium hair.

I’m a gamer, with a wide range of tastes.  Some of my personal all-time favorites are the Civilization series, the Half-Life series, the Final Fantasy series, the Assassin’s Creed series, the Wing Commander series, the Freespace series, and just about everything Blizzard has done from Warcraft II to Diablo III.  I’ve been playing World of Warcraft since April 2005 and my main is a Night Elf Balance Druid.

Webwise, I’m on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, and I’m a moderator of the TV Tropes wiki where we endlessly dissect and analyze media.

In my “wild and crazy” (not!) youth, I played a lot of sports, including soccer, baseball, basketball, and bowling.  I have a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, although I’ve been out of training since we adopted our son and moved to Pennsylvania.  He’s into soccer and swimming, which is great for him because I can help coach him, and great for me because I get outdoors more.

I’ve probably watched or know of just about every science fiction film out there, but my all-time favorites are Star Wars, the Alien franchise, 2001 and 2010, Indiana Jones, the Star Trek films, all the basics.  My favorite authors are JRR Tolkien, David Eddings, Robert Heinlein, Mercedes Lackey, David Brin, Alan Dean Foster, Anne McCaffrey, Tad Williams, and if you aren’t on this list, it’s because I forgot.

I don’t watch much TV these days; I used to be a big Star Trek fan (and original series Transformers, woo!) but I get most of my entertainment off the Internet these days.  Speaking of which, Tobuscus is my favorite YouTube artist of all time.  I wish I could be a tenth as funny as he is.  I’m also a big fan of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

Politically, I am strongly liberal.  I wasn’t always, and frankly, the Democrats need to make up their minds what exactly they collectively stand for, but the nation cannot possibly do worse than what certain conservative forces have in mind for us.  Religiously, I am hard agnostic; I concede that a higher power might exist, but in reality it is both unknown and unknowable, and meanwhile we’re here and have stuff to do.  You can believe what you want but don’t tell me what to believe or how to behave.
